The Accurate Story
I had finished 17 miles of painted 4” lines.
We had walked every step of it over very hot concrete and 110 degree heat, with
no shade at any time. We could have done it at night, but the cost of setting up
lights would have been considerable. We would have beat the heat, but incurred
additional costs.
It took us over a week to do the job of laying out and doing the parking lot
striping. By the time the three of us were done, one of us had some really bad
areas of sun burn, I for sure hadn’t done any of my early skin cancers any good,
and all three of us were just cooked from the heat.
We’d get started early, but by two in the afternoon, we were all whipped from
the sun. The concrete was over 100 degrees to walk on, there was no shade, and
the air temperature was 110 degrees. We were making a living doing pavement
marking, but I asked myself, what was it costing us in wear and tear on
ourselves.
When we finished the project, we were offered another job similar. This one was
25 miles of striping. I knew I wanted the job but I also knew I didn’t want to
do it the same way as the one I had just finished.
I decided the cure might be a riding parking lot striper. I’d seen two or three
advertised. I talked to some of the guys I knew in the business that had them
and they weren’t all that excited about the two piece riding machines. They all
said the same thing... ”they were awkward to use..”
I could see where they would be and none of them offered a way to work with any
type of sun shade. The operator sat a long way from the actual striping tips,
making alignment difficult.
The solution to me was to build a parking lot striping machine as I wanted it
built. The worst that could happen was I’d end up with a machine built the way I
wanted it. If I offered them for sales and they didn’t, I’d still have a riding
parking lot striping machine, for less that what it would cost me to buy one,
have the same equipment, do the same job, built the way I wanted it built. I’d
put a large umbrella on it, to give me shade. I’d be off the hot asphalt,
sitting in a comfortable seat, have a shade umbrella, have a one piece machine,
double my production, and that was to me, a very good thing. Doubling my
production would also do good things for my profit.
We build the Accurate Striper as you see it in the picture. It does a great job.
We built the machine using the finest Graco equipment. We used the 3900 pump,
which supplied the needed amount of paint to our double guns. We fabricated a
unique swivel gun arm. The guns are fully adjustable for height and the swivel
arm, allows us to raise the entire arm for loading and unloading, making it easy
to roll on and off our trailer and truck.
We’ve used our machine for long line pavement marking and for parking lot
striping. We have a 5 gallon paint supply bucket that sits under the pump. When
we fill and refill the bucket, we never get paint on our pump or motor due to it
sitting under the pump and motor, rather than beside it which as you know, will
soon cover the pump and motor with splatter from filling.
We have an adjustable control lever mounted at the steering wheel which allows
the operator to adjust the arm for the comfort of the operator to start and stop
the spray. We use the Graco lever so we can paint with one gun or two.
The clean up of the machine is pretty standard. For ourselves we use mostly
water base paint and the machine, the hoses, and guns clean up quickly with a
little water, which we add a little detergent to.
We fixed the pump filter to the back of the machine so that it can be easily
cleaned and any drip we get, does not fall on the machine.
One of the big benefits is our machine has increased our production. Our
operators would often be fatigued by noon, working on the hot asphalt and in the
intense heat. We now concentrate on our layout in the cooler part of the morning
and when we have sufficient lay out completed, we then begin spraying lines. Our
operators find that by riding instead of walking on the hot asphalt and having
the umbrella providing shade, they no longer have a problem with fatigue. This
shows up in the quality of our work and also the quantity.
Instead of having to walk back to our supply truck to refill the paint bucket,
they now can ride back to the truck, saving them literally miles of walking a
day.
An average parking lot will take 4 to 7 miles of walking a day using a walk
behind machine. Our operators no longer have to walk these miles in the hot sun
on hot asphalt.
When we do long line striping, we find our lines are much smoother. Our walk
behind machines did an adequate job, but with the Accurate Striper, we have much
smoother, more uniform, and much more consistent lines. The foot operated
controls allow the operator to move at a totally adjustable speed which will
give them quality lines. The wider wheel base of our machine gives us much more
uniform lines when painting on irregular asphalt than when we paint with our
walk behind machines. The tricycle type gear of most walk behind stripers have a
tendency to “duck walk” on irregular surfaces. Our solid 4 wheel chassis is much
more stable than the “tricycle gear” machines.
We recommend our machine for all types of striping and pavement marking.
